From working with sharks to working for sharks: leadership and stewardship of the Shedd Aquarium, a Chicago jewel

John Gilbertson, native Chicagoan and longtime board member, will share leadership insights, key strategic decisions and exciting news about the outlook for Chicago’s jewel, the Shedd Aquarium.

During his 27-year career at Goldman, Sachs & Company, John served as partner-in-charge of investment banking services for the Midwest Region. John currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the John G. Shedd Aquarium Society, and as Trustee and member of the Investment Committee of Rush University Medical Center. He served previously as a Board member for Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, the Joffrey Ballet, the Chicago Public Education Fund, and Link Unlimited, a mentor and sponsorship program serving African American students in Chicago.

John serves as a member of the Board of Directors, and Chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee for Meijer, Inc., a leading hypermarket retailer, with 230 stores in 6 Midwestern states, and $18 billion in annual revenue. John previously served as adjunct professor of finance at the Kellogg School of Management. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, John worked for Morgan Stanley & Company, Bain & Company and Chase Manhattan Bank. He also worked as a news reporter for The Providence Journal.

John earned his A.B. in political economy with high honors from Dartmouth College in 1979, and his M.B.A. as a Baker Scholar from Harvard University in 1983. John was born in Evanston and grew up in Northbrook where he graduated from Glenbrook North High School. He lives in Lake Forest with his wife Kathryn E. Harper. They have four adult children.
